Many people think that these words of Jesus related to unbelievers, but in the first place God’s Word related to the Christians. There are broad and narrow ways in the life of Christians. It is written: Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat (Matthew 7:13).
Let’s look at the example of the King David. He was in the war, but one day, when he saw that the army can fight without him, he stayed at home. He chose a broad way, where he fell into the sin (2 Samuel 11).
May Christians wish to live in the prayer and God’s Word, but they feel difficulties, since the world’s temptations do not allow them to. Jesus Christ said: Strive to enter in at the strait gate, for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in and shall not be able. “Strive” it means to try, seek. Jesus tells a proverb: “When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are. Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity” (Luke 13:25-27).
Pay attention to the fact, that who will stand without. It is written, when the Lord asks whence you are, they will answer – we have eaten and drunk in your presence and you have taught in our streets. Jesus was talking about the Christians who do not wish “to enter the strait gate”, about the Christians who are satisfied with going to the Church and listening to the God’s Word only on Sundays.
91st Psalm says: “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty”. Many Christians not dwell in the secret place of the most High, but behave like guests. The church must choose the narrow way.
I am very often invited to dinner, wedding and other events. If I accept all the invitations I’ll find myself on the broad way, not willingly. I do not mind going to visit, but there is a time for everything. Very often we are guided with carnal desires and do what is pleasing to our flesh. I’ll bring a simple example. Today many people have satellites which give an opportunity of watching a lot of TV Channels and due to that reason they can not find a free time for praying.
Beloved, no matter which kind of opportunity we have, our spiritual life should be put in order. God prepared blessings for us, and we must strive to enter in the strait gate.
